A-line
Having a flared bottom and a close-fitting top

appliqué
A cutout decoration fastened to a larger piece of material (can include beads, sequins, etc.

asymmetrical
Not symetrical or even on both sides. (for a hem, one side is longer than the other, or for a sleeve one side has a strap or a sleeve and the other does not.

babydoll
A style that includes a high bodice that sits just below the bustline and flared and loose fitting fabric below it, either as a top or as a dress.

ball gown
A dressy long dress that includes layers beneath the skirt that allow it to look fuller.

bermuda
Knee length walking shorts.

bias cut
Fabric is cut on an angle to create a dress or a top.

blouson
A dress or a top having a close waistband with material bloused over it.

boatneck
A narrow neckline that starts near or at the shoulder and ends near or at the other shoulder with only a slight dip or curve at the neck.

bodice
The upper part of a woman's dress which inludes the bustline

burn out
A process where fabric is sheared to create a pattern within itself. (i.e. a floral or a stripe pattern is created where the burn out portions are more sheer than the rest of the fabric) Normally done on a polyester based fabric.

bustle
A fashion that dates back to the victorian period in which the back of a skirt or dress just below the waist is accentuated with additional fabric that is gathered and is stationary.

cap sleeve
Very short sleeve (as on a dress or top) that hangs over the edge of the shoulder without extending along the underside of the arm

capri
Tight fitting women's pants that end above the ankle.

charmeuse
A fine semilustrous crepe in satin weave. Thicker than standard satin.

chiffon
A sheer fabric especially of silk or rayon.

clutch
A woman's small usually strapless handbag.

corset
A woman's close-fitting sometimes boned top that is often hooked and laced and that extends from above the bust to the waist and may have garters attached.

cowl neck
Tthe same principle as a turtleneck(see below) but on a larger scale with a larger foldover and more fabric that drapes.

cutaway
A coatlike effect with skirts tapering from the front waistline to form tails at the back.

dolman sleeve
A sleeve very wide at the armhole and tight at the wrist often cut in one piece with the bodice.

embroidery
A design or decoration formed by or as if by embroidery by hand or machine needlework.

empire waist
A style that has its roots in grecian times that surfaced again during Napolean's reign that involves a woman's dress or top that has its waistline just below the bustline, thus creating a looser effect below the bustline.

eyelet
A small hole designed to receive a cord or used for decoration. (as in embroidery)

flocked
Created by adding dimension (sometimes in a felt or thick weave)over a fabric in a pattern.

flutter sleeve
A loose-fitting tapered sleeve falling in folds over the upper arm in a short sleeve.

gathered
To pull fabric along a line of stitching so as to draw into puckers.

gaucho
A style of skirt taken from South American cowboys that means a wide legged short pant that ends somewhere below the knee and above the ankles.

gauze
A thin often transparent fabric used chiefly for clothing or draperies that is commonly made out of cotton.

georgette
A sheer crepe woven from hard-twisted yarns to produce a dull pebbly surface that is usually quite sheer.

godet
An inset of cloth placed in a seam to give fullness. (as at the bottom of a skirt)

hanky hem
An uneven hemline that resembles handkerchiefs sewn together at an angle to create pointy ends, usually on a skirt or dress.

hi-low hem
A hemline on a long or short dress that starts above the knee in the front and ends at the floor or longer in the back.

hobo
An extra large handbag that takes its name from the migrant workers or vagrants who had no home and carried all their belongings with them.

invisible zipper
A zipper that is sewn in such a way that fabric is concealing it from being seen.

jacquard
A fabric of intricate variegated weave or pattern. (as in a floral)

jersey
A plain weft-knitted fabric usually made of wool, cotton, nylon, rayon, or silk and used especially for flowing and draped clothing.

kimono
A garment with wide sleeves traditionally worn with a broad sash such as an outer garment worn by the Japanese.

lace up
To draw together the edges of by or as if by a lace passed through eyelets

linen
Cloth made of flax and noted for its strength, coolness, and luster

lurex
A metallic yarn or thread that creates a shiny look.

fishtail hem
To have the rear hemline longer so that it slide from side to sideas it moves.

matte jersey
See definition for jersey, but with no sheen.

mesh
A woven, knit, or knotted material of open texture with evenly spaced holes, as in a net.

mock turtleneck
Looks like a turtleneck (see below) but collar does not turnover.

patchwork
Pieces of cloth of various colors and shapes sewn together.

payettes
Dating back to the layers of plates on a suit of armour, these are thin discs placed in a pattern or randomly on any surface. (earrings, handbags, fabric)

pintucks
Stitches sewn in a linear pattern create tiny tucks. (as in a tuxedo shirt)

pique
A durable ribbed clothing fabric of cotton, rayon, or silk. (usually used for summer clothing)

Pleated
To arrange in set folds. (narrowist to widest are: crytal pleat, knife pleat, box pleat)

pointelle
An openwork design (as in knitted fabric) typically in the shape of chevrons. (zig zags)

poplin
A strong fabric in plain weave with crosswise ribs.

raglan sleeve
A sleeve that extends to the neckline with slanted seams from the underarm to the neck.

Ruched
A pleated, fluted, or gathered strip of fabric.

satchel
A small bag often with a shoulder strap.

Satin
A fabric (as in silk) in satin weave with lustrous face and dull back.

sequins
A small plate of shining metal or plastic used for ornamentation especially on clothing.

sheath
A close-fitting dress usually worn without a belt.

shirring
To draw fabric together.

shrug
A small jacket that covers only the shoulders and a small portion of the bust.

silhouette
The outline of a body -- in clothing, a style or shape.

silk
A lustrous tough elastic fiber produced by silkworms and used for textiles; usually shiny.

silky knit
As in shiny jersey knit.

smocked
A decorative embroidery or shirring made by gathering cloth in regularly spaced round tucks.

stiletto heel
A high thin heel on women's shoes that is narrower than a normal heel.

surplice
A V neckline that overlaps.

tea length
A dress is tea length if it falls halfway between the knee and the ankle on the calf.

torso
The human form above the legs.

train
Fabric at the bottom of a long dress in the back that trails on the floor. (as in wedding dress train)

trumpet skirt
A skirt that resembles a trumpet with a conical or cylindrical shape.

t-strap
Two straps that cross to form a T shape. Usually the back of a dress or top.

tulle
A sheer often stiffened silk, rayon, or nylon net used to create petticoats or fullness in a skirt or dress.

tunic
A hip-length or longer top, blouse or jacket.

turtleneck
A garment (usually a sweater) with a turtleneck has a high close fitting turnover collar.

twill
A textile weave in which the filling threads pass over one and under two or more warp threads to give an appearance of diagonal lines.

voile
A fine soft sheer fabric used especially for women's summer clothing.

waffle knit
A weave in a waffle pattern that is grid like.

wedge heel
A shoe having a heel extending from the back of the shoe to the front of the shank and a tread formed by an extension of the sole

X-back
Straps forming a large X criss cross at the back of a top or dress.
